The story

About the Fira to Oia caldera trail

The Fira to Oia trail follows the rim of the caldera, the sunken volcanic bay that gives Santorini its shape. It runs through the cliff-top villages, so much of the walk passes through cobbled alleys and along sidewalks. Other stretches are loose gravel and cliff path.

A visit is a long walk with no shade in summer, so the timing matters. Start early and carry plenty of water. The views over the caldera and the sunsets are the reason most people come, and the route is usually three to four hours on foot.

  • About 10 km of trail along the rim
  • 1.5 liters of water per person, at least
