Nea Kameni
Nea Kameni is a small, uninhabited volcanic islet in the flooded Santorini caldera. Visitors land at a jetty and climb rocky slopes to look into the smoking crater.
About Nea Kameni
Nea Kameni is a small, uninhabited island of volcanic origin in the Aegean Sea, sitting inside the flooded caldera of Santorini. It is the larger of the two islands in the middle of the bay and holds craters that are considered active today. Its most recent eruptions added new rock to the caldera's floor.
A visit is simple. The boat stops at a jetty, and you walk up a rocky trail to the rim of the smoking crater. Steam and sulfur vents rise along the way, and you watch them from a safe distance. Nea Kameni is nearly barren, and dozens of tour boats come each summer day, so the walk is busy at the top.
- 130 meters Height of the crater
- 2.6 km Trail to the crater rim
