Quick Ship Facts:

Ship Spotlight
Norwegian Gem is a 2007-built, 93,530 gross-ton ship carrying around 2,394 guests at double occupancy. It sits in the comfortable mid-size range of NCL's fleet — large enough to offer twelve restaurants and the line's signature Freestyle Cruising flexibility, but compact enough that it never feels like a floating theme park. Starting October 2025, Gem takes up seasonal Caribbean and Bahamas sailings out of Jacksonville, giving East Coast cruisers a convenient embarkation port that previously had very limited options.
This is a ship that suits people who care more about dining variety and a relaxed onboard atmosphere than waterslides and go-karts. It predates the arms race of mega-ship attractions, and that's either a drawback or a selling point depending on what you're after. If you want Norwegian's flexible approach to cruising without the sensory overload of the line's newest builds, Gem delivers that in a well-worn but capable package.
Gem is a mid-size Jewel-class ship — no go-kart tracks or waterslides, but a solid set of features that cover dining, relaxation, and entertainment without overwhelming you.
A mix of complimentary venues like the Grand Pacific main dining room and specialty restaurants requiring an additional charge, giving you genuine variety without a fixed schedule.
NCL's ship-within-a-ship concept offers a private courtyard, dedicated restaurant, concierge service, and priority access for guests willing to pay the premium.
A main pool area with multiple hot tubs suited to the ship's mid-size passenger count, meaning it's less of a lounge-chair battle than on mega-ships.
A full-service spa offering massages, facials, and thermal suite access — a standard feature on Jewel-class ships that remains well-regarded by regulars.
An ocean-view gym with cardio and weight equipment, plus fitness classes available for an additional fee.
A two-deck main showroom hosting Broadway-style production shows and variety acts most evenings at sea.
Gem's twelve dining venues — from the complimentary Grand Pacific to specialty spots — give you genuine meal-to-meal variety without a fixed schedule. The mid-size footprint means shorter walks between venues and less crowding than the mega-ships.
Gem predates the era of race tracks, multi-story waterslides, and observation lounges found on NCL's newest ships. If cutting-edge onboard attractions are a priority, you may find the activity lineup feels dated by comparison.
As a Jewel-class ship, Gem's cabins reflect mid-2000s cruise design — functional but not as polished or spacious as what you'll find on Prima- or Breakaway-class vessels. If modern cabin aesthetics matter to you, manage expectations or consider booking a Haven suite for a more premium feel.
Dining
Norwegian Gem carries twelve restaurants split between complimentary venues and specialty options at an additional charge. Complimentary dining includes the Grand Pacific main dining room. Specialty restaurants expand the range for guests willing to pay extra.
The variety means you can eat somewhere different every night on a week-long sailing without repeating. Freestyle Cruising's no-fixed-seating policy applies, so timing and venue choice stay flexible throughout the voyage.
Several of the twelve restaurants require an additional fee. Check whether a dining package fits your plans before boarding to manage costs.
Freestyle dining has no fixed seatings, but popular venues fill up around traditional dinner hours. Consider earlier or later slots to avoid queues.
Cabins
Gem offers the full range of Norwegian cabin categories, from inside staterooms up through suites. The ship has 412 inside cabins and 785 outside cabins in various configurations including ocean view, balcony, and mini-suite options, plus The Haven suite complex.
The spread of cabin types means budget-conscious travelers can find an inside stateroom while those wanting a premium experience can book into The Haven. Knowing the differences before you book matters, especially on a Jewel-class ship where Haven suites differ from newer builds.
With 785 outside cabins versus 412 insides, balcony and ocean-view options are plentiful. Book early for preferred midship locations.
Gem launched in 2007, so its Haven suites lack some amenities found on newer Jewel-class successors. Set expectations based on this ship specifically.

Norwegian Gem carries about 2,394 guests on a mid-size hull, delivering NCL's flexible Freestyle approach without the mega-ship crowds. Expect a laid-back vibe with twelve dining options and competent but not cutting-edge entertainment.
Gem is ideal for couples and families in the Southeast who want a convenient drive-to port for seasonal Caribbean and Bahamas sailings. The ship rewards those who value dining variety and flexible scheduling over thrill rides and waterslides.
Gem was built in 2007 and predates the onboard attractions arms race — no go-karts, no multi-story waterslides. You get solid fundamentals and a proven dining lineup, but passengers expecting the newest NCL hardware will notice the generational gap.

Ship was fine. Nothing special. Loved the itinerary. Food in the MDR is what ruined it for me. It was not good. I generally enjoy the MDR, but after 3 nights just couldn’t go back. I had been wanting to try NCL. Now I have. One and done
WE WERE UNHAPPY WITH THE SMALL MENU CHOICES THAT VARIED ONLY SLIGHTLY OVER THE 12 DAYS. THE FOOD TEMPERATURES WERE TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AS RECEIVING A HOT ENTREE WAS A PLEASANT SURPRISE. THE SEASONINGS OF THE FOOD CHOICES WERE LACKING. LA CUCINA, CAGNEY'S, AND ORCHID GARDEN WERE ACCEPTABLE. MODERNO WAS UNACCEPTABLE AS THE FOOD APPEARED TO BE MADE AT 5:30 AND JUST KEPT WARM TIL NEEDED. THE MEATS WERE TOO DRY BUT THE LAMB WAS RAW-NOT RARE....RAW. A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, AND THE SERVER DISAPPEARED FOR 20 MINUTES AT A TIME. WE FELT LIKE WE COULD NOT EVEN ESCAPE THE ROOM!!! LE BISTRO HAS REDUCED THEIR MENU TOO MUCH AND THE 'FRENCH' OPTIONS WERE A JOKE. THE BUFFET WAS THE VERY SAME DAILY EVEN THOUGH A TYPE WAS FEATURED NIGHTLY, IT WAS THE SAME AS THE REST OF THE DAY. SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD IN THE BUFFET. I WAS SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU CAN NO LONGER GET A REAL EGG AT THE BREAKFAST BUFFET AS THE EGGS ARE ONLY BEATEN FOR OMELETS. IT WAS CATCH-22 AT O'SHEEHAN'S WHETHER YOUR EGGS WAS HOT OR NOT. I BELIEVE THESE ISSUES GO FARTHER THAN THE STAFF FACE-FRONT DOING THE WORK. THE HEAD CHEF AND RESTAURANT MANAGERS NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR EITHER THEIR TRAINING OF STAFF OR LACK THEREOF. THE TEMPERATURE ISSUES WERE THE MOST SERIOUS OF ALL OF THESE COMPLAINTS AS ILLNESS CAN RUN THROUGH THE SHIP QUICKLY. WE HAVE SAILED NORWEGIAN AT LEAST 10 TIMES AND THIS WAS THE FIRST 'MOST WORST'. WE ARE REALLY HOPING THIS WAS ONLY THE GEM AND ARE ALREADY BOOKED ON THE EPIC AND ARE HOPING FOR A BETTER REVIEW THEN.
Food was excellent in all areas. Staff were very responsive, friendly and helpful. We truly enjoyed this cruise with NCL’s more than any other. Will definitely book with them again.
Complaints to NCL: No nightly show.for every night 7/0pm Downgraded quality of food in the main dining room, no higher cuts of beef, no lobster night, no prime rib, etc. Mostly fish, turkey, chicken, pasta. Only one time daily stateroom cleaning service. Elevators were slow, doors would reopen automatically if the button was pushed too soon, and often skipped our floor. In the past we have ALWAYS been able to use our on-board credit for tips. With no notification, we were told at the customer service desk ON THE LAST DAY, that we could not use the credit for tips. If we would have known ahead, we could have used the spa services, used specialty dining, or ordered up on our main dining room entrees to include the steaks/lobster dinners. This was very disappointing to us and we feel, somewhat dishonest and certainly unexpected by NCL. All we could do was use the credit at the shops for merchandise we did not actually need or plan to buy. Fix this. If you must stay with this policy, NOTIFY YOUR LOYALTY GUESTS OF THE CHANGE IN THAT POLICY. It is the honorable thing to do. This diminished our faith and loyalty to NCL. Compliments to NCL: Service from crew was always cheerful and accommodating. Ship was lovely. Buffet was preferred to the main dining room because of options and convenience. Embarkation and debarkation processes were fast and convenient. Ports were enjoyable.
Norwegian Gem is an appealing choice for couples and families who value dining variety and the relaxed Freestyle Cruising approach without needing the waterslide parks and go-kart tracks found on NCL's newest mega-ships — and its new Jacksonville homeport makes it especially convenient for travellers in the southeastern U.S. The honest tradeoff is that this is a 2007-built Jewel-class ship, so its entertainment offerings and public spaces feel a generation behind Norwegian's Prima- and Breakaway-class vessels, which may disappoint passengers expecting the latest at-sea innovations.
Norwegian Gem begins seasonal sailings from Jacksonville in October 2025.
