The story

About Chankanaab Park

Chankanaab sits on Cozumel's south side, inside the island's national reef marine park. The name comes from Maya, where chan means small and kanaab means ocean. The area was declared a protected area in 1980 and shelters the region's plants and animals.

A visit is mostly about the water and the beach. Snorkelers float over the reef right off the sand, and there is a lagoon with iguanas and a crocodile enclosure. The park also has a botanical garden and recreations of Maya villages, along walking trails.
