A cost-effective optional travel protection plan is available to help provide coverage throughout your cruise vacation.  Subject to all plan provisions, this optional plan offers coverage for:

  • Missed Connection: Can provide up to $500 if your arrival at the cruise terminal is delayed by at least 3 hours due to a covered reason.
  • Travel Delay: Can provide up to $150 per day (up to $500 total) reimbursement of your unused prepaid expenses and / or additional expenses that you may incur if you are delayed for 6 hours or more due to a covered reason while en route to or from or during your cruise.
  • Baggage & Personal Effects: Can provide up to $1,500 to repair or replace lost or stolen baggage.  Specific limits apply to certain items.
  • Baggage Delay: Can provide up to $500 for necessary personal effects if your checked baggage is delayed more than 24 hours.
  • Trip Interruption: Can provide up to $500 for return airfare if you must interrupt your trip for a covered reason..   
  • Accident & Sickness Medical Expense: Can provide up to $25,000 for medical (or $750 dental) expenses that you incur due to illness or accidental injury.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: Among other benefits, this can provide up to $50,000 if you need to be transported to a hospital or medical facility due to an acute or life threatening medical condition or accident.  Also includes coverage for Medical Repatriation and Return of Remains.

In addition to the insured benefits described above, the travel protection plan also includes Non-Insurance Assistance Services which can help you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week anywhere in the world while on your cruise.  Benefits include locating emergency medical facilities, replacing lost or stolen passports, providing emergency cash advances, obtaining alternative travel arrangements and many other valuable services.

If you elect to purchase a plan, the cost of your plan coverage will be based on the total length of your cruise, as shown below:

EXAMPLE: The total cost of plan coverage for a 10-night cruise is $39.00 per person.

*NOTE:  If your cruise reservation includes air transportation and / or pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel accommodations or land excursions, the period of your plan coverage and the cost of your plan will be based on the total number of days that fall within your cruise reservation (including the cruise plus any additional days before or after the cruise for which air and / or ground accommodations have been made through the cruise line as part of your cruise reservation).

Questions And Answers Regarding The Cost-Effective Optional Travel Protection Plan

Q1.  What is the deadline for electing the optional travel protection?

A1.  Although Travel Insured International encourages all of Direct Line Cruises’ clients to elect this cost-effective optional travel protection plan as soon as they book their cruise, the plan can be elected up to the date on which your cruise line requires you to pay for your cruise in full (which is typically 3 to 4 months before your cruise departure date).

Q2.  When will I be charged for the optional travel protection if I elect it?

A2.  Direct Line Cruises will not charge your credit card for the optional coverage until your Final Payment Date.  If you book your cruise within the Final Payment Period, your credit card will be charged when you elect it.

Q3.  If I elect to purchase this optional travel protection, can I change my election?

A3.  If this optional coverage is elected when the cruise is booked, it can be cancelled any time before the Final Payment Date (and any pre-paid premiums would be fully refunded by DLC).  If you elect this coverage less than 14 days before Final Payment, you can cancel this optional travel protection for a full refund up to 14 days after the date you elect the coverage (but it can't be cancelled after the coverage begins on your trip departure date).

Q4.  Are there exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions?

A4.  Yes.  However, the exclusion for pre-existing medical conditions will be waived by if the coverage is purchased on or before the final Payment due date and the insured person is not disabled from travel at the time your premium is paid.

Q5.  If I cancel my cruise before the departure date, will this optional travel protection reimburse me for any cruise line cancellation penalty charges?

A5.  No, this optional travel protection plan is designed to help provide coverage while you are on your cruise vacation.   

Q6.  Who would I submit my claim to if I incur a Covered Expense while I’m on my cruise? 

A6.  You would submit your claim directly to the insurance provider, Travel Insured International (  The phone number for their claims department is 1-800-243-3174.  Direct Line Cruises can assist you in the claim submission process but is never involved in determining whether or not a particular claim is payable.  All claim decisions are made by the insurance provider, based solely on the terms of the plan and the proof of loss and / or medical evidence that you provide. 

Q7.  What company insures the post-departure benefits?

A7.  Travel Insured International provides the insurance benefits. They are underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, which is part of the Crum & Forster group of companies which are rated A (excellent) by AM Best Company (a leading analyst of insurance company financial strength).
