Freedom of the Seas is the first in a class of three ships that bears the same name. Actually, calling the Freedom or any of her sisters just a cruise ship does not appropriately describe what you will experience once you step onboard. With the innovative features and vast array of restaurants, bars and lounges that are available, these ships are truly floating resorts!

Those that seek an active vacation will find plenty to do on the Freedom of the Seas. The FlowRider, an amazing surf simulator, made its debut on this ship.  The FlowRider combines the thrills and skills of surfing and body surfing, all in a wet, wild and (best of all) safe environment. Furthermore, the FlowRider is unique in that spectators enjoy watching as much as the participant enjoys riding!

The amazing thing is, although Royal Caribbean added this incredible experience, they did not take anything away. Guests can still enjoy scaling the rock wall, playing basketball, volleyball or mini golf, practice their swing with the help of a golf simulator, or even ice skate!

There are more pools and hot tubs on the Freedom of the Seas than are found at most land based resorts!  Something is always going on at the main pool and most afternoons a band plays nearby. A huge screen hangs above the main pool perfect for movies in the evening. Across the way the sports pool it’s not unusual to see a water volleyball game in progress or some crazy game concocted by the cruise director! To escape the madness guests can seek refuge in the solarium, where they’ll find a pool and two cantilevered hot tubs that extend 12 feet beyond the side of the ship!

Kids have their own pool area, and what an area it is! H2O Zone is a zany, colorful water park featuring interactive sculptures, fountains, geysers, waterfall and pool. Also for young cruisers, through a partnership with Royal Caribbean and DreamWorks Animation kids can meet and greet the characters from Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda.  There’s even a 3D movie theater to catch first run shows!

While all Royal Caribbean ships offer the award winning Adventure Ocean children’s programs for ages 3-17, the Freedom of the Seas also has the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery where the littlest of cruisers can be left in the care of trained professionals.

A three-tier dining room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guests can choose from traditional main or late seating or the open seating that Royal Caribbean calls My Time Dining. There are two reservation-only restaurants aboard the Freedom.  Chops Grille is a traditional steakhouse, and Portofino is Italian restaurant. Both are well worth the small surcharge.

The casual Windjammer Café offers an extensive buffet to choose from, whether it is morning, noon or night. Jade, located in the same area, serves Asian fusion cuisine.  It is open nightly for dinner and offers innovative creations as well as traditional favorites. For smaller meals and snacks Johnny Rockets, Sorrento’s, and the Promenade Café are great choices as well as the Cupcake Cupboard.

After dinner is a good time to enjoy the entertainment on the Royal Promenade.  In addition to visiting the bars, the 70’s dance party and parades are held there as well.   A multitude of themed bars and lounges throughout the ship offer something for everyone. Guests can also enjoy the ice show, casino and Vegas-style production show starring the Royal Caribbean Singers and Dancers.
