Norwegian Cruise Line Changes Beverage Package in Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that beginning March 1, 2026, its onboard beverage packages will no longer be valid on Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private Bahamian island. Guests will need to purchase drinks individually or opt for a new island-specific beverage package, part of NCL’s broader plan to revamp and enhance the Great Stirrup Cay experience.

What’s Changing & When

Beginning March 1, 2026, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) passengers will no longer be able to use their onboard drink packages while ashore at Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas. This change impacts all standard and promotional beverage packages, including those previously valid on the island. Complimentary non-alcoholic drinks such as water, iced tea, and juices will still be available to all guests.

To replace the existing policy, NCL plans to introduce a new island-specific beverage package available for purchase starting January 1, 2026. Details about pricing and inclusions have not yet been released, but the line has confirmed that the change is part of a broader effort to redefine the island experience.

Why NCL Is Making the Change

This shift comes as Norwegian Cruise Line continues its large-scale enhancement of Great Stirrup Cay. The cruise line is investing heavily in upgrades, including a new multi-ship pier, a resort-style pool area with complimentary loungers, and expanded family-friendly amenities like a splash pad for children.

A centerpiece of these developments is the upcoming Great Tides Waterpark, expected to open in summer 2026. It will feature 19 water slides, a dynamic river attraction, and new dining and lounge options. NCL has explained that as it reimagines the island’s overall experience, adjustments to amenities like beverage packages are necessary to balance investment and guest offerings. The company has stated that the change will also allow guests more flexibility in customizing their experience ashore.

How This Compares with Other Cruise Lines

Norwegian Cruise Line is not the first cruise company to limit beverage package use at private destinations. Carnival Cruise Line, for example, also restricts its Cheers drink package on its new Celebration Key private destination. However, some competitors, like Royal Caribbean, still allow their onboard drink packages to be used on their private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Updates Coming

As Norwegian Cruise Line releases more details about its new beverage package options and the island’s upcoming amenities, Direct Line Cruises will continue to provide updates to help travelers plan and prepare for their next visit to Great Stirrup Cay.
