Trip Mate “Cruise Protection Plan”

Travel InsuranceDirect Line Cruises is pleased to provide travel insurance through Trip Mate, Inc., one of the leading companies in the industry.  Coverage is underwritten by the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company.  The Nationwide Group of Companies has a long history of financial stability, with over 135 billion dollars in assets and an A+ (Excellent) rating by A.M. Best Company, independent analysts of the insurance industry since 1899.

Clients of Direct Line Cruises have a choice of two insurance plans through Trip Mate.

  1. The Standard Cruise Protection Plan is included with all cruises 5 nights or longer.  It can reimburse you for cruise line penalty charges if you have to cancel or interrupt your cruise for a covered reason such as sudden and serious illness, injury or death in the family.  The Standard Cruise Protection Plan also provides 24-Hour Worldwide Travel Assistance Services during your cruise, such as medical emergency referrals, multi-lingual interpretation services, emergency cash advances, tracking lost or delayed baggage and replacing lost or stolen travel documents.
  2. The Optional Upgrade Plan (available at extra cost) includes all of the benefits of the Standard Plan (trip cancellation/interruption and worldwide travel assistance services), and also includes a waiver of the Pre-Existing Medical Conditions exclusion which expands the Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage under the Standard Plan, as well additional benefits to reimburse you for Baggage loss or delay and Emergency Medical Expenses incurred during your cruise vacation.  The Optional Upgrade Plan is highly recommended for clients who want more comprehensive travel insurance coverage and for those clients who want the added protection of a Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion Waiver.  However, the Optional Upgrade Plan is only available if you elect it at least 90 days (3 months) before the sailing date or, if you make your cruise reservation less than 90 days before the sailing date, the Optional Upgrade Plan is only available if you elect it within 7 days after you book your cruise.

*Because travel insurance coverage is so important, the Standard Cruise Protection Plan is automatically included in our price quotes for cruises 5 nights and longer.  If a client elects to decline insurance that would otherwise be included for a cruise 5 nights or longer, a credit will be provided equal to the actual premium cost of the Standard Plan (2.1% of the cruise fare excluding port taxes and fees).  For clients electing the Optional Upgrade Plan, the additional premium ($30.00 per person under age 65 and $60.00 per person age 65 or over) will be added to your Cruise Reservation Confirmation.

Trip Cancellation
Reimburses 100% of non-refundable cruise line imposed penalties if a client cancels his/her trip for a covered reason (such as sickness, injury or death of the client, a traveling companion or family member).

Trip Interruption

24 Hour Worldwide Assistance Services
Provides medical and legal referral services, language interpretation assistance, emergency cash transfers, travel document replacement services (for tickets and passports), lost baggage tracking, etc. during the cruise.

Reimburses up to $500 for additional meal and accommodation expenses, plus unused/non-refundable land and water accommodations and additional air expense to catch up to the cruise, if client is delayed en route to or from the cruise for 5 hours or more due to a covered reason (such as traffic accident, road closings, flight delays, inclement weather, etc.)

Missed Connection
Reimburses up to $500 for additional travel expenses to “catch-up” to a missed cruise ship departure because of a weather-related airline delay of 3 or more hours.

Emergency Medical Expenses
Reimburses up to $50,000 for emergency medical expenses due to sudden and serious illness or injury that first occurs while on the cruise. Emergency dental expenses are covered up to $750 (only for accidental injury to natural teeth that occurs while on the cruise).

Emergency Medical Transportation
Coverage up to $100,000 for evacuation from ship if, during his/her trip, an insured passenger needs to be transported for a covered reason to a hospital (or home) for emergency medical treatment.

Baggage/Personal Effects
Reimburses up to $1,000 if baggage is lost or damaged during a trip, subject to a $300 per item maximum limit. Jewelry, watches, furs, cameras and similar equipment is limited to $500 in total.

Reimburses up to $250 for necessary items if baggage en route to cruise is delayed or misdirected by a Common Carrier for more than 12 hours.

Important Notes:

- For cruises 5 nights or longer, the Standard Plan premium is included in our rates.  The Optional Upgrade Plan may be elected at $30 per person under age 65 and $60 per person age 65 or over. – The Optional Upgrade Plan may not be elected less than 90 days before the sailing date or, for later bookings, not more than 7 days after the date booked.
- The same coverage election must apply to all passengers in a stateroom.
- For cruises less than 5 nights, the Standard Cruise Protection Plan may be elected at $39.00 per person.
- For cruises less than 5 nights, the Optional Upgrade Plan may be elected at $69 per person under age 65 and $99 per person age 65 or over.
- Clients may add insurance coverage (at $19 per person) for airline reservations that are included with the cruise package.
