The Norwegian Gem serves as the anchor to the cruise line's Jewel class: the sixth and newest entry into a very successful line of cruise ships. Like its sister vessels, the Norwegian Gem was designed to emphasize NCL's emphasis on Freestyle Cruising. It stresses a relaxed atmosphere designed to let passengers make choices at their leisure, rather than following a determined schedule. Many cruise lines offer buffet dining with a set seating chart and eating time. The Gem's food service is made to order, and passengers may come and go as they like when eating. There are a dozen restaurants onboard, as well as eleven bars and lounges to provide different options. The dress code is similarly casual and both onboard activities and debarkation proceedings stress informality and relaxation. Other amenities include a four-lane bowling alley and a series of garden villa cabins with private gardens available.
Like many of Norwegian Cruise Line's ships, the Gem is based out of New York City, with an emphasis on Caribbean and transatlantic tours. Most of its cruises are fairly long, with Caribbean excursions typically lasting a week or longer and European trips extending into two weeks. The European line of the Gem's itinerary focuses on the Mediterranean, with Barcelona serving as the local debarkation point. Online cruise services can arrange for travel to and from New York as well as a ticket on the Norwegian Gem itself. With offices in the New York area, Direct Line Cruises can book passage onboard the Norwegian Gem.
