Royal Caribbean Rhapsody of the Seas

Rhapsody of the Seas is a Vision-class ship, one that would be considered small by today’s standards.  I actually prefer the term “intimate” as you can characterize this ship by its warm, friendly, informal atmosphere. The open feeling of the Centrum and the amount of glass used in public venues fill the ship with airiness and brightness.

The two swimming pools are on deck nine of this ship.  The main pool area is the hub of lots of daytime fun hosted by the cruise director and his staff.  Activities may include pool games, line dancing, belly flop contests or even a man’s hairy leg contest! Two roomy hot tubs on each side of the pool provide the ultimate in poolside relaxation.  The other pool, along with two additional hot tubs, is located in the Solarium, an adult only area. The best feature of Vision-class solariums is the crystal canopy retractable roof, so even on a gloomy day there is nothing preventing guests from swimming and lounging in this lovely serene environment.

Further aft is the day spa, a full service facility designed to relax, refresh and renew your body and mind. There are treatments and massages that cater to men, women and teens. Directly above the spa is the fitness center with its state-of-the-art equipment.  No home town gym has views like this! The outdoor rock climbing wall and jogging track is also up here. To the very forward of deck ten is the Observatory, the perfect spot to read a book, or contemplate life while gazing out at the sea.

Solarium Pool on the Rhapsody of the SeasThe two-tier Edelweiss dining room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (in case you’re wondering, edelweiss is a song from “The Sound of Music”). For the latter, guests may select traditional main seating, traditional late seating or My Time Dining, which is an open seating concept. Another dining option is the Windjammer Café, a buffet style restaurant open for meals and late night snacks. In the Solarium Cafe you can feast on burgers, fries, pizza and other fast food items.

The Broadway Melodies Theater is home to production shows starring the Royal Caribbean singers and dancers as well as guest entertainers.  Shows are generally scheduled at two times per evening to accommodate early and late dining times. There are eight bars / lounges on the Rhapsody but in the evening the most popular are the Viking Crown Lounge, Schooner Bar, Champagne Bar, “The Moonlight Bay Lounge” (another show tune) and the Shall We Dance Lounge (from “The King and I”…are you picking up on a theme?). There’s live music and dancing going on each and every evening to suit a variety of tastes.

Casino Royale is a great place to spend an hour or two, even if you’re not a big gambler! Nickel slot machines are perfect for those that just want to have some fun without making a large “deposit.” One of the best parts about gambling at sea is that the cruise ship dealers are more patient and willing to help a beginner learn the games. There are even free gaming lessons.  Aside from slot machines, Casino Royale has blackjack, craps, roulette, and Caribbean stud poker.
