Launched in 2007, the NCL Gem is the newest of Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Jewel-class” ships.  Drawing from their success with the other three ships in her class (the Jewel, the Pearl and the Jade), NCL’s designers wanted the Gem to contain the best features of each and, in the opinion of many NCL cruise fans, that’s just what they accomplished with the Gem.

Like all ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line Fleet, the NCL Gem features “Freestyle Cruising”.  That means no formal dress code and no assigned dining times or tables.  There are 13 restaurants and 16 different dining venues on the Gem.  So, guests can eat when they want, where they want and with whom they want.

The Norwegian Gem also features a 4-lane bowling alley, a wii game screen that is 2 decks high, plus swimming pools, water slides, a spa, casino, duty-free shopping and much more.  So, regardless of your itinerary, getting there on the NCL Gem will be a big part of the fun.

Like the three NCL “Jewel-class” ships that preceded her, the Norwegian Gem offers a wide variety of stateroom accommodations ranging from low-cost inside cabins (143 square feet), to larger ocean-view cabins (161 square feet) and standard balcony cabins (205 square feet) which can accommodate up to 4 passengers.  Then, of course, there are the suites which include the entry-level “Mini-suites” (285 square feet), “Romance suites” (375 square feet), “Penthouse suites” (341to 489 square feet) and “Courtyard Villas” (480 square feet) which surround a private pool and exclusive guest area.

Got a “few extra bucks” to indulge yourself with on your next cruise?  Try one of the “Owners Suites” (791 to 1,195 square feet) on the NCL Gem or, for those with families in tow, one of the 2-bedroom suites (546 to 572 squarefeet) may be a more practical luxury.  Not big enough?  Then, perhaps you may want to consider the massive 3-bedroom Garden Villa (4,252 square feet), which has a formal dining room and living room with baby grand piano.

For those who like “mid-size” ships (and for 1st-time cruisers), the Norwegian Gem is a great choice.  At 93,530 gross registered tons, it weighs-in comfortably between the 50,000-ton  “small ships” and the 150,000-ton “mega ships”.  With a beam (width) of 105 feet and length of 965 feet, it’s big without being overwhelming.  In short, it’s a great cruise ship with a wide range of features and amenities that offers something for everyone.
