Overview
Launched in 2007, the NCL Gem is the newest of Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Jewel-class” ships.  Drawing from their success with the other three ships in her class (the Jewel, the Pearl and the Jade), NCL’s designers wanted the Gem to contain the best features of each and, in the opinion of many NCL cruise fans, that’s just what they accomplished with the Gem.

Norwegian Cagney's SteakhouseLike all ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line Fleet, the NCL Gem features “Freestyle Cruising”.  That means no formal dress code and no assigned dining times or tables.  There are 13 restaurants and 16 different dining venues on the Gem.  So, guests can eat when they want, where they want and with whom they want.

The Norwegian Gem also features a 4-lane bowling alley, a wii game screen that is 2 decks high, plus swimming pools, water slides, a spa, Norwegian Cruise Line Bowlingcasino, duty-free shopping and much more.  So, regardless of your itinerary, getting there on the NCL Gem will be a big part of the fun.

Like the three NCL “Jewel-class” ships that preceded her, the Norwegian Gem offers a wide variety of stateroom accommodations ranging from low-cost inside cabins (143 square feet), to larger ocean-view cabins (161 square feet) and standard balcony cabins (205 square feet) which can accommodate up to 4 passengers.  Then, of course, there are the suites which include the entry-level “Mini-suites” (285 square feet), “Romance suites” (375 square feet), “Penthouse suites” (341to 489 square feet) and “Courtyard Villas” (480 square feet) which surround a private pool and exclusive guest area.

Norwegian Gem SuiteGot a “few extra bucks” to indulge yourself with on your next cruise?  Try one of the “Owners Suites” (791 to 1,195 square feet) on the NCL Gem or, for those with families in tow, one of the 2-bedroom suites (546 to 572 squarefeet) may be a more practical luxury.  Not big enough?  Then, perhaps you may want to consider the massive 3-bedroom Garden Villa (4,252 square feet), which has a formal dining room and living room with baby grand piano.

For those who like “mid-size” ships (and for 1st-time cruisers), the Norwegian Gem is a great choice.  At 93,530 gross registered tons, it weighs-in comfortably between the 50,000-ton  “small ships” and the 150,000-ton “mega ships”.  With a beam (width) of 105 feet and length of 965 feet, it’s big without being overwhelming.  In short, it’s a great cruise ship with a wide range of features and amenities that offers something for everyone.

Consumer Review:Absolutely LOVED sailing on the Gem & re-booked for next year! Everything was excellent from cleanliness to pleasant & prompt service with a smile ALWAYS! NCL will be the only ship we ever sail on!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Consumer Review:All in all a real good trip. cheesecake tasted more like a mousse With so few news TV stations to have only fox network news is a shame. To politically slanted toward republicans and against Pres. Obama for me. Internet a little expensive
Consumer Review:All nine of us were very pleased with the cruise. The service was good, and the crew very friendly, polite, and helpful. The ports were great and the private island - wonderful! The food and entertainment were excellent. There was one disappointment though, - 3 of us wound up with some kind of virus and were sick on the ship. - Not a good thing. It was the first time my husband and I ever got sick on a ship.
Consumer Review:Boarding was fast and orderly. no problem. The ship was beautiful and clean. Entertainment was very good. Really enjoyed every show and the entertainment in the bars was also very good. Really do not care for anytime dining so we made sure we went at 5:30 or 6 and had no problem. If you arrived later there was a wait. As for the main dining room, food choices were not very good and also portions were very small. They really did not have much of a choice on the menu that there is on other cruises because they want you to use the special restaurants. With that I would not take another NCL cruise. as for disembarkation we chose to carry off our luggage. Taking a cruise from NYC so did alot of other people carryoff their luggage. When we were called to get off the ship half the ship tried to get off, we started getting off at 10:00 and finally got off at 11:30. people were on the stairs and decks with their suitcases. It seems funny because they started to call color tags to get off and the carry off passengers were not off yet, which added to the confusion. Never seen anything like this and have been on about 20 curises. Unless I won a free NCL cruises I would not take another one. All and All we did enjoy our vacation. Linda
Consumer Review:The cruise was amazing. The Ship was great. The food was unbelivable. Ready to go again.
Consumer Review:Enjoyed traveling on the Norwegian Gem. This was our second time on the ship. We were impressed with the food and services provided by the ship.
Consumer Review:Everyone encountered was eager to please and meet our needs. The balcony rooms were smaller than our past experiences, especially the bathroom. My wife banged her head several times while using the facilities... We can only wonder how a larger person would fare.
Consumer Review:Everything from booking this trip to the different ports, entertainment, food, service, weather, cabins and wonderful memories were perfect. Thank you Direct Cruise Line. We would certainly recommend your service to others.
Consumer Review:Excellant cruise!! The staff was very attentive and friendly to our needs. I was so comfortable and relaxed at all times.Soooooooooooo clean. Thank you Capt Frank!!!! Enjoy your vacation!!
Consumer Review:excursions were very expensive. ship offered little or no information on port of call ground transportation options for those whom opted to travel on own. very disappointed.
Consumer Review:Food quality in main restaurants definitely down. Seems they are pushing you to try specialty restaurants. Food was inedible some nights.
Consumer Review:Great cruise. Excellent service. Courteous and knowledgeable staff. Excellent food. Great entertainment. Large theatre that could accommodate a large number of people. Great program for children of all ages. Everything was satisfactory except for the price of alchoholic beverages. Cocktail prices should be made reasonable and daily service charge must be reduced.
Consumer Review:Great for families with teenagers. Kids had an awesome time and made friends. The entertainment (guitar player, piano player, second city improv) was terrific. Shore excursions filled up quickly - but, not a problem. We easily rented a car in Cape Canaveral and drove to Sea World. It was less expensive, more fun, more flexible, etc.
Consumer Review:Having taken 14 cruises, this was our first time leaving out of NY and it was the best part of the trip, smooth check-in. The Gem does not live up to its name! • Freestyle doesn’t mean eat when you want – it means, eat when they want you to eat. The times change, everyone is eating at the same time, dining rooms are too crowded or they are closed. I like having a set time for dinner, that’s part of the cruise experience • Food at the buffet and in the dining room was mediocre • The set up in the buffet needs to be reconfigured – there is not a smooth traffic flow and people keep walking into each other. By the time you get a drink and find a table, your food is cold • The food service crew is not friendly nor do they go out of their way to be helpful. The food and service in the specialty restaurants was excellent, however you are paying extra for this and this is how it should be all over the ship. The entertainment was good. While the ship itself was relatively clean and well maintained, the overall feel from most of the crew is that they are not happy being there. We have not been on an NCL ship in many years, and will not be back. Even given the opportunity to win a free cruise on NCL, we didn’t participate. Most of our cruises have been on RCCL and we think they are great. We are not big fans of “Freestyle Cruising”.
Consumer Review:I enjoyed the atmosphere of "free styling dining" as well as the decor of the ship itself - tasteful. We enjoyed leaving from NY city port since it was so easy a drive and less of a bother for winter travel plans. I disliked the loud music around the swimming pool, but appreciated the quiet zone on deck 13. The library was very nice as well as playing Wii in the Atrium. We had lots of fun playing trivia. I'd never played the Wii before and had lots of fun playing hola hoop, bowling, running, and balance games. Wish there had been more time to play with the Wii! I also used the fitness center at least 5 times during the cruise and love the elliptical in particular. I believe there should have been more activities onboard particularly for the days at sea. Example, good lectures on topics like art, history, carribean history and governments, cultural events, musicology. There are many educated people on board who would enjoy the intellectual stimulation. We particularly enjoyed the music from the on-board 4 man band (from barbados) who played lovely music by Bob Marley and had a wonderful singer and bass player. The music was very mellow and very professional. The service was outstanding thoughout the cruise - at dinner, our stateroom and on board. We were irritated by the entertainment manager and preferred his british "assistant". We like the Gem dancers and the Black Jazz singer and professional band were all excellent entertainment. THe hypnotist and comedy acts didn't interest us or the banjo player.
Consumer Review:I FIND THAT SHORE EXCURSIONS ARE OVER PRICE FOR WHAT YOU ARE GETTING.
Consumer Review:I have never been around such wonderful customer service - the crew seemed so happy and pleased to be working there!
Consumer Review:I just finished my cruise. I did first time with NCL GEM. what they said free style cruise. Their embarkation process is take too long, they request pre check-in, I did but when I arrived in terminal we have to wait 1and 1/2 hour in line. Not like other cruise line room key is not ready until you take picture. By the time we get in ship we had only 15 minute to eat lunch , because they close restaurant for emergency drill traing . ( We get the terminal by 1 O'clack P.M and get in ship by 2:40 P.M) . Other things, thry have 12 restaurant in ship but 8 of them have cover charge plus 15% service charge. Rest 4 of them have no cover charge but you have to wait at least 25-40 minute to get in. The food is not great compare with other cruise line. Restaurant waitress is ruddy not trained propely. Per exemple, I joined sode program when I order one soda and I request other soda for my family, one of the waitress told me that program is not transfereble and only one person who joined that program and he denied my request, I konw that is rule but it is not right. I cruised 2 years ago with Royal Carribean cruise line, and I had same program with that ship and first night the waitress know I have that program, on the dinner table the waitress brought always 2 or 3 soda even I didn't requested.
Consumer Review:I love the tipping service. It's much cheaper than how we used to tip. We missed having a designated table meeting new people. We never got to know our housekeeping people or the head table waiters personally like we did on Holland America, Carnival, Princess and Royal Caribbean. This is the first boat which lacked the personal touch. They do not know our names nor do we with theirs. Our past housekeepers on the other ships kept tab when we left the room. They always greeted us in the hallway and asked if we needed anything. They would make up our rooms without us asking them. With the freestyling cruising, we have learned that we ask them with the wheel by the door. Our first night, we were so disappointed because the bed was not made and we did not get a surprised bunny towel nor did we get to meet our people. The tours were very good. We loved them. The maps were poor. We could not find the cruise stores. On HA or Princess, the maps were distinct and you could find the ship stores no matter what. We went on tours each day except for Cannes. I think you need to have two presentations. Most people are busy with other activities and cannot make it to that time. I think there should be another extra day on the sea. People would like to enjoy the trip. The return trip to Barcelona was hellish. Many people were motion sick.
Consumer Review:I took the Gem in Feb of 2010 and enjoyed the ship and ports of call so much that I took the same cruise this year and hopefully will do so again next Feb.
Consumer Review:I was very impressed by the keen attention to cleanliness in all areas, and in particular the food buffet areas. It made for a worry free experience.
Consumer Review:I would not return to the Norwegian Gem. I found the staff to be less than helpful although friendly. The food was terrible and the specialty restaurant did not accommodate my low sodium diet. My husband, friends and I paid the extra dining fee solely so that diets can be accommodated so we were grossly disappointed that the food was salt-laden. Even though we asked for the sauce to be on the side, it was still slathered all over the steak. Between the saltiness of the meat and the sauce, it was inedible. The quality of the food in the main restaurant buffet was poor - salty, fatty and cold. We did not particular enjoy eating room temperature food. We all refused to touch the salad because the lettuce was brown. In order to eat cheese, you had to cut it with a communal knife that was sitting in dirty water - yuck! While I recommend Direct Line Cruises, I do not recommend the Norwegian Gem. I am so utterly disappointed with NCL that my family and I are considering changing our future cruise with NCL to a better cruise line.
Consumer Review:In need of a specual diet the assistant maitra'd made sure my meals were prepared perfectly. All the crew were very friendly and made sure our cruise was a very happy experience.
Consumer Review:Just returned from a 10 day cruise on NCL's Gem. Lovely ship, Good food. Friendly service. Enjoyed it so much I am planning to repeat the trip next year. This is my 12th cruise - 4th on NCL.
Consumer Review:Love crusing out of N.Y. on NCL. Freestyle crusing is the best. Wish there was a bigger selection of ships leaving from that port. W@ould like to visit different places each yer. Offering 5 day cruises might be worth a look. Thanks DLC. Great trip.
