Holland America Ryndam
Named after a dam on the Rhine River, the MS Ryndam is a Holland America ship built for 1,260 passengers. The ship made its debut in 1994 with a grand design, and then 10 years later, received a series of Signature of Excellence enhancements. The upgrades included the new Mix space, spa staterooms, and the Showroom at Sea. At the artistic heart of the MS Ryndam is a Dutch worldwide exploration theme. You’ll see artifacts and art spaced throughout, with pieces dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. The true center is a grand fountain, designed by Gilbert Lebigra, in the three-story atrium.
BasicsThis Statendam class ship has long gone through Caribbean itineraries in the winter and then shifted to Europe in summer. That’s predicted to change by 2015, as new refurbishments with equip it for handling cruises to Australia. The current plan includes Holland America’s standard stateroom arrangement. Interior and Ocean-View spaces begin with luxurious basics: Euro-Top beds for nights of comfortable sleeping, massaging showerheads, fresh fruit, and a television with a DVD library. As the next levels up, the Vista/Verandah Suites and Neptune Suites introduce a new degree of elegance and exclusiveness. Along with the basics, you’ll get access to the Neptune Lounge, be able to serve drinks from a mini-bar, and have fresh flowers and high tea upon request. On board this ship, the five-course, continental meals are served in the Rotterdam Dining Room, with low-carb and vegetarian meals available and an extensive wine list for the perfect pairing. For the next level up, try out the elegance of the Pinnacle Grill, known for top-tier meats and seafood served on the finest china. For some variation, don’t forget to try some Italian at Canaletto, order something fresh at the Lido Restaurant, or enjoy a terrific cup of coffee and the morning paper at Explorations Café.
