The Mercury launched in late 1997, as the last in Celebrity's Century line of cruise ships. Before the expansion, the company was primarily known as a high-end luxury service. The Mercury and its sister ships were intended to expand into larger vessels, providing Celebrity's level of service to larger numbers of passengers. Celebrity uses the ship as part of its more adventurous line of cruises, stressing natural wonders over exotic tropical locales. The centerpiece of its touring schedule is a series of cruises to see the Alaskan glaciers. Luxury cruises of Hawaii and the Panama Canal are also available, as are more modest three- and four-night tours of the Pacific Northwest.
Onboard accommodations further stress an adventurous theme. Several onboard naturalists speak about the local flora and fauna on the cruise, and the Mercury's Alaskan expeditions follow the path of migrating humpback whales during the appropriate season. The ship also includes more traditional amenities, albeit with an upscale twist. The main restaurant, the Manhattan, includes wide picture windows, while the upper-deck bars and lounges afford wide ocean vies. The Mercury also contains an art collection like many of the Century's cruise ships, as well as an Aquaspa, a computer room, and spaces for teenagers and younger children onboard. Luxury tours on the cruise ship can be found through an online agency such as Direct Line Cruises, which can handle travel to and from the port of departure in addition to booking the cruise itself.
